Cotton Seed is the seed of the cotton plant, whose mature seeds are brown ovoids weighing about a tenth of a gram.Gossypol is the active component extracted from cotton plant (genus Gossypium),which accounts for about 1.5% of the seeds in weight, and is mostly used as medicine in the form of Gossypol Acetate (cotton seed extract) , with function of permeating cells and acting as an inhibitor for several dehydrogenase enzymes.
Acetate Gossypol(cotton seed extract) has been tested as a male oral contraceptive in China, has also long been known to possess antimalarial properties. Clinical studies indicate that it has potent anti-tumor and anti-virus activity, and has been used for treating cancer of the adrenal cortex and cancer of the bladder.
