The first step towards a ban on PFAS in Europe - the Norwegian Environment Agency

Five countries join forces and propose restrictions on the production, sale and use of the environmental toxin PFAS, in all contexts, in the EU / EEA countries. We ask for input on the data base from industry and industry organizations. On 15 July 2021, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Norway formally announced their intention to submit a restriction proposal for PFAS to the European Chemicals Agency ECHA by 15 July 2022.A restriction proposal is a first step on the road to a possible ban.PFAS are man-made chemical compounds that are very poorly degradable and thus remain in the environment for a very long time if they are first released. There are between 5-10 000 different PFASs.The PFASs carry a risk of contamination of groundwater, surface water and drinking water. Some PFASs accumulate in the food chains and provide high levels in top predators.Harmful effects on humans and the environment can not be ruled out.The five countries have published summaries of the information they have gathered about PFAS so far, and we have created a questionnaire in which we ask for further information to fill knowledge gaps. This survey is primarily aimed at relevant industry and industry associations, but is also aimed at companies that produce or have knowledge of alternatives to PFAS.The aim of the survey is to ensure that the information about PFAS and alternatives is accurate and representative of the market situation so that we have the best basis for a knowledge-based restriction proposal for next year.Among other things, such information may form the basis for assessing any exceptions or special conditions for certain applications of PFAS that are particularly important to society and where alternatives are not available. In order to make such assessments, the five countries depend on cooperation with the companies, as they often have the most detailed information needed in such assessments. The questionnaire is open until 17 October. We ask relevant companies to review relevant information and report necessary corrections or additional information. To use the Norwegian Environment Agency's website, you must have JavaScript enabled in your browser.Click here to read more about how to enable JavaScript in your browser ...
